The Estonian Film Institute gave a green light to Veiko Õunpuu’s new film “The Last Ones” with a first phase support of 212,000 Euros. The film takes place in the tundras of Lapland on the other side of the polar circle.
“The film is a Nordic film with Western elements about love, bloodshed and revenge that takes a wider look at the moral erosion brought on by the industrial revolution forcing its way into areas recently governed by cohabitation with nature,” said Veiko Õunpuu. As a genre, and hinting at the Western, he proposed we call the film a “Northern”. The idea for the film came from Heikki Huttu-Hiltunen who is one of the authors of the screenplay together with Finnish critic Eero Tammi and Veiko Õunpuu. The budget for the film is 1.4 million Euros, the main character will be played by Pääru Oja and other roles will go to Tommi Korpela and Liis Lass. The DOP is Sten-Johan Lill, the costume designer is Jaanus Vahtra and the sound designer is Matis Rei. The film is produced by Katrin Kissa of Homeless Bob Production and co-produced by Bufo of Finland.
